The Trivium

The three classical subjects of the Tricium are Grammar, Logic, and Rhetoric. Another definition of learning that is Biblical is Knowledge, Understanding, and Wisdom.
As children mature we recognize three intellectual abilities:

  1. Knowledge - the gathering of information
  2. Understanding - arranging the information in logical order
  3. Wisdom - putting this information and this ordering into practical use.

The Knowledge or Grammar Stage
during the child's early years, the capacity for Knowledge has the greatest growth. At this level, we teach the children the skill of comprehensio, how to receive information or how to gather facts. Knowledge is taught through telling and demonstrating, coming through all the senses. A vocabulary of facts and rules is learned. Lessons are combined into units with history, geography, literature, and art connected. The goal is to develop competence in the reading, listening, writing, oberving, and measuring.

The Understanding or Logic Stage
As children mature, Knowledge continues to grow, but the capacity for Understanding emerges as the primary skill. With a large foundation of facts given to the child, a growth spurt occurs through which the child learns the skill of reasoning, to investigate. The education model is best taught coaching, correcting, and drilling. The learner needs a vocabulary of realtionship, order, and abstractions. The teachers goals are to develop competence in the tools of investigation: analyzing, comparing, and contrasting.

The Wisdom or Rhetoric Stage
Beginning sometime between fourteen and fifteen years of age, children develop the capacity for Wisdom. When the child is at this level, he or she is taught skills of prudent judgment and effictive expression through communication and practical application. This is taught through encouragin individual initiative and innovation, asking questions, and leading discussions. The teacher imparts a vocabulary of philososphical ideas and values. During these years, Wisdom continues to grow and develop but all three capacities - Knowledge, Understanding, and Wisdom - which have been developing all along, emerge as a fully team of tools.

The capacities for Knowledge, Understanding, and Wisdom are not neat little compartments. Rather, they all devellp at the same time from the very beginning , yet they each pass through succesive periods of intensive developments, until they finally work together harmoniously.

Why Do We Follow a Classical Model and Method?
The best reason for choosing the classical way of schoolin is becaseu this is the Biblicakl model written into reality. The classical way has been successful for millennia because it conforms to the created nature of things. If we ever learned anything, we learned it by the tribium method - where we knew it or not.
